The Town and Country Planning General Development Order 1988

In 1988 we saw a new version of the GDO produced. This version replaced the 1977 version as well as the eight amendments made to it.

This order applied to the whole of England and Wales.

The 1988 version was a complete rewrite of the GDO and starts to resemble what we see today. For the first time we see various Parts and within that various alphabetic classes, replacing the previous Roman numerals. A lot of this was taking advantage of the new Use Class Order which was introduced in 1987. It was also the last GDO, before it became the GPDO in 1995.

During the lifetime of this GDO, we saw toll roads being a development right; also controls over the demolition of buildings. We also see what is now ‘Class G’ introduced in 1995, for 2 flats above a shop.

SI 1988/1813 was laid before Parliament on 31st October 1988 and came into operation on 5th December 1988.

There were no less than sixteen amendments of the GDO 1988. If you need to check for any legislation in the GDO of 1988, you ought to check each of the amendments below to see if they had any impact upon the development right. Any amendments after the implementation of the development right, will not affect it.
